MAJOR SIGNING: Bailey Flavell
Rising New Zealand basketball star Bailey Flavell has officially signed with the Launceston Tornadoes for the upcoming NBL1 South season, bringing her exceptional talent and proven ability to the team.
Flavell had a standout year in 2024 and has quickly established herself as one of New Zealand's top young basketball talents. At just 17 years old, she earned a spot on the New Zealand Tall Ferns (Women’s National Team) and competed in the FIBA World Cup Pre-Qualifier in Mexico. As co-captain of the NZ U 17 Women’s team at the FIBA World Cup, Flavell led the team in multiple categories, including points, blocks, steals, and efficiency, finishing as the third highest scorer in the tournament with an average of 18.9 points per game.
Her accolades extend beyond international competition, with Flavell named in the All-Star Team at the NBA Basketball Without Borders Asia Camp and helping her team secure a bronze medal at the FIBA Asia Cup. Flavell has committed to the University of Hawaii in mid-2025, marking another exciting chapter in her basketball journey.
“I am very excited to come to Tassie and play for the Launceston Tornadoes. I am looking forward to playing for Zoe and in the NBL1 South. Can’t wait!” said Flavell.
Head Coach, Zoe Mesman commented on Flavell’s signing “I’m thrilled to welcome the next generation of NZ basketball to our program here in Launceston. Despite her age, Bailey’s maturity and understanding of the game make her a standout on any court. Her fearless attitude is a credit to her and her family."
"Bailey’s defensive hustle and ability to block shots and steal the ball are exceptional. Her moves and confidence around the rim will inspire young players across our State. She will inspire both NZ and Tasmanian basketball communities."
Vice Chair, Madi Shepherd, expressed her excitement, saying, “Bailey’s future in basketball is incredibly bright and we are looking forward to watching her strengthen her game as a Tornado.
Flavell will be sponsored by Cripps as they return as a sponsor of the club in 2025.
